Why do people become members of a church?

In the New Testament letter of 1 Corinthians (Chapter 12), Paul speaks about the church as a body with many members.  The metaphor of the body teaches that every person in the church matters and every person has an important ministry to keep the body strong and healthy.  Church membership is a person’s commitment to the church to be an active, growing part of the community. At the same time, church membership is the church’s commitment to each member to be accountable for one another.  So, we embrace church membership because it strengthens the body and strengthens each member of the body.
